The Honorable William C. Buhl (retired) founded the Van Buren County Drug Treatment Court program in 2008, which has served 340 individuals to date to reduce substance abuse addiction and crime in the community. The Van Buren Country Family Treatment Court was established in 2012 by the Honorable Paul E. Hamre (retired) to reduce child abuse and neglect from parental substance abuse addiction. These programs result in a much higher success rate than traditional approaches, at a fraction of the cost.
In general, arrest records over the past decade from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Department indicate that the community suffers from substance related crime involving alcohol, marijuana, and methamphetamine. The Drug Treatment Court is committed to improving the safety of our streets and the quality of family relationships by reducing addiction related crime.
Under the collaborative leadership skills of the Court, Prosecutor’s Office, Defense Bar Association,
Sheriff’s Department, Health Department, Community Mental Health, Department of Corrections, and the Department of Human Services, this program gives our community a valuable resource to stop the cycle of addiction.
